Planning the transformer room in a tricity building
Getting the transformer room right at drawing stage saves rework later. These are the points we most often see missed on tricity projects.
1. Oil or dry-type?
Indoor rooms in hospitals and towers usually call for dry-type. Outdoor yards can use oil-filled units, which cost less.
2. Space and access
Allow clearances around the transformer for maintenance and a clear path, door size included, to bring it in and take it out.
3. Ventilation
Transformers give off heat. Plan natural or forced ventilation for the full rated losses, not the average load.
4. Cable routes
Mark HT and LT cable entries and trench sizes early.
5. Losses and efficiency
For an energy-rated building, choose the efficiency level and ask for loss figures to feed the energy model.
6. Standby plan
Decide what happens if the unit fails. Jaybee AMC customers can get a standby transformer within 24 hours of a reported fault.
